Archbishop Giovanni Tonucci is the Archbishop and Vatican's Delegate of Loreto. He was born Dec. 4, 1941 in Fano. He completed his studies in 1960 and entered the Pontifical Major Seminary in Rome. In 1966 he was ordained a priest by Mons. Costanzo Micci, then bishop of Larino. In 1968 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He continued his studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in pedagogy and then at the Lateran University attained degrees in theology and canon law.
From 1971 to 1973, at the beginning of his diplomatic career, he served at Yaoundé, Camerun and then from 1974 to 1976 at London. He then returned to Rome where he worked in the First Section of General Affairs of the Secretary of State of the Holy See by the side of Mons. Agostino Casaroli. He then moved to the Second Section-Relations with States under Mons. Achille Silvestrini. In 1984 he was assigned to the Nuntiature in Belgrade, Yugoslavia where he remained until 1988. He was then transferred to Washington, D.C. in the U.S.A. On October 21, 1989 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Torcello and Apostolic Nuntio to Bolivia. Pope John Paul II consecrated him bishop on January 6, 1990.
In 1996 he left the nuntiature in Bolivia and became the Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the United Nations in matters of environment. He also fulfilled the duties of Apostolic Nuntio in Nairobi, Kenya. On October 6, 2004 he was appointed Apostolic Nuntio to the countries of Scandinavia where he remained until Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Loreto.
