In September of 2011, Br. Lazarus — formerly Sam Sharpe —
joined the community for the Franciscan friars for the renewal, more commonly known as the CFR’s.
As a high schooler, Sam was one of the most highly touted baseball players in the country.
While playing ball for the Kansas City Sluggers (the same program that produced Albert Pujols
and other major leaguers) Sam was ranked the 3rd best player in the state of Kansas by Baseball
America for the 2006 major league baseball draft. Instead Sam elected to pitch as a University of
Nebraska Cornhusker. While at Nebraska Sam had a profound experience of his own weakness
and the Lord’s mercy and decided to transfer to the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
It was at Steubenville that Sam really began to discern Christ’s word to “come and follow me.”
Today Sam is known as Br. Lazarus of the CFR’s and he continues to answer Christ’s call each
and every day.
